MOAR KLUANG 2010 - 3rd - 4th July 2010

a little summary. Mother of All Reunions (MOAR) is actually a massive reunion of all the decendants of my greatgrandparents (my paternal grandmother's parents), Wong Lip Hon and Lee Siew Fah. They had 16 children together in their marriage to each other :D (i know, they are very fertile, aren't they? ;)) anyway, here's the press release to give u all a better idea:

Look ma! we are on newspaper! :D (i dont know how to read tho :D - but according to my cousin, it's similar to the one below :D)

Press Release for MOAR 2010( Article)
Dynasty or Family

Just over a century ago in 1906, Pu Yi was born and destined to rule under the Qing Dynasty.

13 years earlier, in 1893, Wong Lip Hon was born to more humble beginnings of itinerant Hakka settlers in the southern provinces of China and destined to form a close knit extended family known as the Segamat Wongs.

The former became the last Emperor of China. The latter was kidnapped and shipped to Borneo, consigned to meet the ever growing labour demands of the trade world at the beginning of the last century. Both witnessed the 2 Great World Wars. The last Manchu Emperor married 5 times but had no children and died in 1967.

Wong Lip Hon married once to Lee Siew Fah and together, they had 16 children consisting of 9 daughters and 7 sons. They met in Singapore and settled eventually in Segamat where he became a successful businessman. Miraculously all the children survived childbirth and bore them many grandchildren. He died in 1985 and his wife in 1990.

His 11 surviving children range from 69 to 86 years of age. This close knit family today has grown to over 400 - consisting of 72 grandchildren, 120 great grandchildren, 50 great, great grandchildren and over a 100 in-laws.
Spanned over 4 generations with a fifth on its way, the Wong clan in 2010 decided to celebrate the lives and times of this incredible couple who have managed to build a close family that spans all over the globe and to celebrate and honour the 11 surviving siblings.

When it comes to family reunions, it is very common to have family members to be spread across 3 generations. However, this unique Segamat Wong Family Reunion was attended by family members from 4 generations.

Affectionately termed as the ‘Mother of All Reunions - 2010’ or MOAR for short, it is the first reunion of its kind to be organized which reunited 230 relatives from around the world. Planning for the Mother Of All Reunions started as early as 2 years ago to ensure all family members were contacted and represented. The event aimed to allow family members to meet altogether, many for the very first time.

The MOAR weekend took place over 2 days on the weekend of the 3-4th July 2010 and was celebrated in true Malaysian style. A meeting of the clan was held at the Canossian Oasis retreat in Kluang, Johore, for a feast of traditional Malaysian hawker food stalls. These stalls were specially selected and stationed at the retreat for the day long gathering.

The celebration was highlighted by a gala dinner held that evening at the Prime City Hotel, Kluang officiated by the respectable Pastor Victor Wong. There were various performances presented by each generation. Relatives from overseas who were unable to attend the Reunion were beamed live on SKYPE via the internet to join in the night of celebrations. At MOAR 2010, every relative was issued a special identification tag on a coloured lanyard categorized by clan.

The following day, a moving memorial service was held at the Chinese Christian Cemetery in Segamat, Johore for Mr Wong and Mdm Lee .The service was conducted by their grandson, Pastor William Wong from Singapore.

This reunion has brought much anticipation and excitement to those attending with the different generations reaping different reactions. Said Mr Lum Chye Seng, a third-generationer who hails from Sydney, Australia, “This event was to honour the 11 surviving siblings. It was amazing to see how truly engaged and excited they were to be as actively involved as they could. Just their attitudes alone left a legacy, an imprint for future generations.” Mrs Mary Tan, one of the organizers, quipped, “Organising this event was no simple task, and a great deal of effort and coordination was required. But seeing the joy of the siblings and camaraderie of all present at the event, from the youngest (6 months) to the oldest (86), plus the fact that the event fostered even closer ties between the family members, was truly heart warming. Memories are indeed made of these.”

Press Release for MOAR

When it comes to family gatherings, it is very common for family members to be spread across 3 generations. This July, a mega Wong family reunion that spreads across 5 generations, was held in Kluang and Segamat, Johore.

This gathering, affectionately termed as the “Mother Of All Reunions” is the first reunion of its kind to be organized and reunited over 250 relatives from 14 cities in countries all over the world like America, Australia, United Kingdom, Europe and Asia.

The Wong clan originated from Mr Wong Lip Hon and Mdm Lee Swee Fah who hailed from China and settled in Segamat eventually. The couple had 16 children consisting of 9 daughters and 7 sons from one marriage. The surviving 11 siblings are aged between 86 and 69. Over the years, the family has grown to include 72 grandchildren, 120 great grandchildren and 50 great great grandchildren. The various professions represented include pastors, doctors, lawyers, journalists, engineers, army officers, businessmen, musicians and even an ex-Olympic hockey player.

Planning for the Mother Of All Reunions started as early as 2 years ago to ensure all family members were contacted and represented. The event aimed to allow family members to meet altogether, some for the very first time. after 2 years of emails flying across the globe to prepare for this Mother of All Reunions, it finally materialized last weekend.

here's the summary of what happened thru my eyes :)

2nd July 2010, Friday

Woke up at 4am as Lisa they all planned to pick me up at 4.30am-4.45am coz we wanted to reach Kluang earlier to cramp all the food we wanted to eat in. Mana tau, kena conned. Lawrence woke up late and we ended up leaving at 5.30am. i could've slept another 30mins :D

reached kluang at around 8.30am and went over to Lisa's parents' house to drop off their luggages. Then at around 8.45am they sent me to my popo's house. We had our 1st round of food at Chua Seng - roti bakar, telur separuh masak, nasi lemak and mee siam! i almost died and gone to heaven :D this breakfast was a huge thing as well coz some of the relos was already in kluang. we ended up taking almost half the coffee shop :D

after breakfast, went over to popo's house to collect stuffs to bring over to Oasis, Cannosian Convent. i forgotten what time did we arrive Oasis but i am guessing around 10ish. a few of the committee members were busy finishing up the press release, sitting arrangement for the banquet on the following night and the ID tag for each of us. what did i do? nothing much. just stoning and giving out minimal suggestion. i was pretty sleepy and tired then. we left the Oasis for yummilicious Ngau Lam mee (Beef tripe noodles) at around 1ish 2. the standard has dropped quite significantly... but i will still go back there la :D it's still good - but not as good as before :D service a little bit sux tho.. but i will still go back there :D

after lunch, we headed over to Kluang Mall for last minute shopping of stuffs for the event. after shopping and hanging out and laughed non stop, we went back to Oasis around 4ish 5. Baby Mika and my godparents already arrived then and i hang out at their room playing with the baby for sometime before going down to have dinner - catered from Hoover :D. the food was not bad. terence and family arrive shortly before dinner. we did some catching up before my kuku, unc. lau and auntie lingling and i decided to sneak out to have the pork/beef balls noodles (omg... it's still as good :D and i love it sooooooo much :D). after makan, we went back to oasis and alot of them has gone off to watch Brazil being slaughtered :P not long later, godpa told us that abang they all are sort of lost so i just follow them out to guide abang they all into oasis. hang out a bit. then i needed to rush back to popo's place to get my luggage bag. terence was a not a happy camper when i interrupted him watching Brazil being slaughtered... wahahhahahahaah....

3rd July 2010, Saturday

Dad told me to be at Oasis by 8am. i woke up at 8am all panicking... called my dad to told him i will be late only to find out he is still asleep =.=" (he stayed over at the oasis to catch up with his cousins)

when i arrived Oasis sometime before 9am, the whole place smell of freshly brewed coffee and roti bakar. The Kluang Rail Station has set up a booth there. and i straightaway made a bee line to the roti bakar queue. it is seriously the best roti bakar ever! :D everything became a blur then.... i mean i dont really remember much now... i just remembered eating a lot, looking at the kids play, talking and laughing with the aunties, uncles and cousins. in between then, minger and joanne and family arrived. talk talk talk and eat eat eat, then we took almost an hour under hot sun to capture the family picture :) after that, i gotta teman my dad and auntie lingling to see kong kong at around 2ish. i missed out on the rehearsal for our generation's segment (which is a big no no la... coz that nite i didnt even know what to do so i tried to hide behind all the cousins :P) for the banquet that night. anyway, that afternoon was a huge rush for me. from kongkong's place, rushed back to oasis coz elizabeth needed the car. see see when we reached oasis, she was already back at kongkong's place =.=!!! saw Cynthia and baby Audrey (very very cute!) for awhile and then have to rush back to kongkong's place to pass the car to elizabeth. then she sent me back to get ready for the banquet.
these ID tags shows which of the 16 children's family are we from with our name and ID number :D my official number is 6.3.2 (meaning to say my popo is the 6th child of my greatgrandparents, my dad is the 3rd child of my grandparents and i am the 2nd child of my parents :D):D

rehearsal time for the 5th generation kids :D They were preparing to sing Jesus Loves Me

rehearsal by the 4th generation - which i missed. We sang Stand By Me :D

this is just the 1st 10mins of getting everyone to gather together to take family photos :D

My darling Chanel was tired from the 1hr long photo shoot ... awww :D

Here's a beautiful video to summarize the afternoon (done by my cousin, Terence :))

The MOAR Banquet Dinner at Prime City Hotel, Kluang

the banquet - the food is really nothing to shout about. the whole event was really extremely great. found out more about my greatgrandparents and their families. my god! my greatgrandpa was kidnapped from china when he was 11yrs old and my greatgrandma's 3 brothers is some significant people and can be found in some historical book. they were all missionaries (my greatgrandma's father was some famous missionary as well) and one of them was killed by the Japanese in the WWII for trying to spread the Good News to the ppl.

The dinner programme. :D

The beauties of 3rd generation who fail in opening the umbrellas :D There was this young picture of my grandma and 2 of her sisters. So what happened was, uncle Victor ask their daughter to come up to the stage dancing to the tune of pretty woman :D it was so hilarious! they were so sporting! :D My taiku (in black) later lamented that if she knew of this, she would've veto-ed it :D

there were slide shows of my greatgrandparents and their children all through out the night and it was pretty entertaining. kudos to uncle victor for inserting the speech bubbles :D we had so much laughter that i ended up having jaw ache :D

After the dinner, i went home having warm fuzzy feeling all over. i seriously love my family soooooo much! went on FB and chatted with a few cousins before falling asleep at around 2am

4th July 2010, Sunday

Again, i kena conned by my dad (i tell u ah... this trip back, every morning also kena conned into waking up one!! :P). I asked him the previous night what time are we leaving the house for Oasis and he told me 7.45am. So, ok, i mah set my alarm clock at 7.15am. see see, my dad woke me up at 6.30am =.=!!! but it was all good la.. i mean what are the chances of us having such massive reunion again? :D

went over to Oasis around 7ish and the whole place was already bustling with activities. We left Oasis for Segamat for memorial service at the cemetery and lunch at around 10ish. i sweat buckets. really. i never been to a cemetery before, so wasnt prepared to sweat so much :P after a short service (i think about 1hr), we headed down to Segamat town for lunch. the food was really really good. :D
My Great Grandparent's tombstone :D

They came prepared. I was at the other side being roasted like a pig :D

after lunch, we took about 1hr or so to say good bye to each other :D the ride back to kl was a really really really really tiring one. we traveled on the trunk road all the way to Alor Gajah, Melaka and it was damn bumpy! and then got stuck in this really massive crawl before the Alor Gajah toll plaza. We arrived KL around 7ish and went over to Taman Paramount for Hokkien Mee (i pay, coz i lost a bet - long story :D). went home around 8ish 9 and slept before 10pm :D

overall, this reunion thingie is pretty addictive (for me la), i sort of had a withdrawal syndrome when i went back to my apartment. i wanted to turn back the clock and experience the reunion all over again. there were so many relatives that i didnt manage to speak to.

conclusion? if anyone ask me if i wanna participate in the next MOAR, i will definitely jump up and say: HELL YA!!!! :"D

i <3 my family :D

updates

Redbabe and I went over to Singapore to attend Jeff's wake on Wednesday. it was an impromptu thingie. we took the 5.30pm flight over to Changi and then took the 11pm flight back to LCCT. it was pretty exhausting for me coz i totally forgotten we need to walk alot in Singapore. But it's all good. at least i get to bid him farewell for the last time.

i've stopped going into Facebook for awhile. it's pretty depressing see friends leaving condolences on his wall. he is a good guy.

i was lamenting to Redbabe the other day. How come nice ppl die young and bad ppl (like that stupid serial cab rapist) havent drop dead yet?

i do not have many recent memories of Jeff as the last time i saw him was CNY 2009 and that also a brief encounter at a restaurant. before that, it was sometime end of 2008 before Jading left for Shanghai.

My memories of Jeff were mostly our secondary school days and that is also fading from me. i dont wanna sound like a hypocrite on how close we were coz that was 17yrs ago and things has changed. but i do know that he is a nice guy from the brief encounters we have had in that 17yrs after school.

he will still be missed by me. and i am still sorry for being a bitch to him. i apologized to him that nite when i was at his wake and i hope he knows i am sorry.

his passing has been a wake up call to me. i've made peace with my family and i've sent sms to ppl that i care to apologize (but no one reply me - which i am not gonna pursue coz i've done my part and it's up to them now)

as for my master plan. it's down in the drain. cannot la... i've realized i've not live enough yet. i am building a longer bucket list to fulfill.

kong kong suffered another 2 mild strokes on wednesday and got hospitalized. he has a new accessory on him now - a tube thru his nose for feeding. he is now solely on liquid diet. he has lost all the joys in his life and i seriously wonder if he wish is dead or something.

no, i m not being mean/evil/bitchy. he is a man of super ego. i m pretty sure he is very miserable now. i m just wondering if he secretly wish he is dead or something.

was making plans to drive back to visit him, but murphy's condition is not so optimistic as well. need to send him to hospital before i can decided anything.

i will be making a trip back to kluang anyway on the 1st weekend of july for the MOAR thingie. yes, i really am trying to make peace.

i m exhausted. really seriously exhausted. i just wish to sleep for a long long long long time.

brain aint working that well due to the lack of sleep. i shall end here now.

time flies...

... damn fast :D half a year has passed and in about 1 year's time, MOAR is gonna take place in Kluang :D this is gonna be interesting :D

currently those relos are getting rakus in how to identify all of us. wat am i doing? nothing! hahahahahahahaha let them discuss la... i malas nak input so much :D

i missed having those fun family gathering with my karchengs. as we all grow older, with more commitments elsewhere, it's sad to see us drifting further apart :(

anyway, yea, MOAR will be great and fun IF my karchengs go back too :D

MOAR 2010

Some of my relatives are planning a Mother of All Reunions in 2010 (MOAR 2010). This reunion is for the descendants of my great grandfather (my popo's father), Wong Lip Hon. What happened was, about 2.5yrs ago, some of the uncles (my father's cousins - popo's sisters' children) who has been living overseas for decades decided to plan a reunion after they have gotten more and more relatives in the mailing list. Anyway, Unc. James sent us an email today and i was actually amazed that this MOAR 2010 is really gonna happen! :D Anyway, here's the email:

29th May 2009.
Hello All
Its time to start the process of organizing this big event.Over 2.5 years ago we had mooted the idea of having a reunion for this wonderful Wong family.
It all seem improbable and the talkfest were encouraging but felt distant.
It was liken to Martin Luther King’s famous saying-“I have a dream”.
Well that dream I am please to report to you all is becoming a reality .
With just over a year now to go now we have finally poured some cement to the foundations. We have moved up one gear and as we count down the days we will move up another gear and then to top gear.
We are now only 400 days to the big event.Soon it will be under a year.
We are encouraged to hear from some many relatives to want to be part of the picture and make this event a huge success.Others remains skeptical but its our job folks to convince the extended family members to the merits of this grand reunion .We are hoping that each clan will bring home all their respective family members –all the way down to the wee babies. We want to meet ALL our relatives and have a great party.
We want to celebrate the great Wong family. We want to bring together the last surviving 12 brothers and sisters and pay our respects and celebrate them been together again.
We all need to be there……….too.
We have nearly 400 hundred relatives and with the extended family we are hoping for a big turnout. Its a very big family so lets all do our bit to make it a huge success.
I am aware we are all busy in our respective lives.Work, kids, home duties, taxi driving the kids to Kumon and back etc.So take a break from the Kumonitis and book your holiday to MOAR- 2010.
The event will begin at 9am ,Saturday 3rd July 2010 .It will be an all day event and at night we will adjourn to a big dinner. On Sunday 4th July 2010 , we will be hiring coaches to take us all to Segamat to pay our respects to Kong Kong and Por Por and also to tour Segamat and this will be a day outing. So do book some time off and plan ahead.

3 themes have emerged since MOAR 2010 was mooted. No doubt we will have more themes between now and July next year .
1.Its the great reunion of all the family members. It will be a celebration of our elders and tribute to them.It will be an opportunity to showcase our respective clans. Many clans have not been together for a long time so lets take this opportunity. It will be a great means to meet all the family members we have never met- it will be one hell of a family photo!!.
It will show our younger generation who and what- as they are losing touch with the extended family- as I am.
It will bond us as a family physically, psychologically and spiritually .

2.MOAR will take the opportunity to celebrate the birthdays of our senior members. As we have everyone around-why not celebrate their birthdays too.
So we are celebrating any family members that turn 80 and 70 in the year 2010.
To date we will be celebrating the 80th birthday of 5th Aunty and the 70 th birthdays of LFC and MC.
Anyone else please let us know and we will include into the plans.

3.Charity fundraiser-
Whilst raising funds I have been asked as to what we will do with any surplus money after we have paid off the expenses of the MOAR celebration.
Well you know I reflected long and hard .
Recently I had the wonderful opportunity to meet briefly with TT in Melbourne at E's wedding(TKP’s daughter).
She talked about her evangelical work and charity projects and it did inspire meShe gave me the inspiration .
Now ,the Wong family have a long history of pastoral calling. Our foreparents had pastoral blood in them.
Our present flock we see many family members engrossed in pastoral care- Pastor VW,Pastor KF, Pastoe WW, T and T,A.L to name a few.
We are a family of charity and benovelence.Such fine spirit should not go unnoticed. We need to build on their good work and do more.

So, the plan is that we plan set up an account with leftover money from MOAR and we will donate to charity as appropriate- one I can think of is A.L’s work with the Children’s Home- for abandoned children (More later). This way, no one need to worry whether the surplus money will go into someone pocket or how to divi it up.

Now some update:-
As mentioned earlier we have laid the foundation finally- the dream is now a reality.
After exhaustive investigations of a few facilities we finally booked the following.

1.Venue:
Day Setting:-
Please to announce we have secured a wonderful site in Kluang for the 3rd July 2010.
It will be at the Oasis- at the Canossian Convent.Situated on the hilltop,it has impressive grounds. It is big,secure-allfenced in-so children safe.It is private- no rif rafs nearby to stir up problems. The grounds are spacious, serene and tranquil. For those who know Kluang- its along the Batu Pahat Road – at the traffic lights near where U.T and A.L live.So transport is no issue.
It will easily handle over 300-400 people and have enough facilities to hold our MOAR.There are big gardens for the children and caterers to feed us.There are covered areas for sitting and kitchens/dining rooms. It has a first floor so this will be ideal for the photographer to take the must have photo from top down..
The drive way is massive with ample parking spots for all our cars and pick up by the coaches on Sunday to Segamat.
This place is truly children friendly so parents please be assured- bring all the troops –do not leave home with the inlaws to mind –we all want to see your kids.- the future.
There are PA systems .
We will not be cramped in and will have ample space and we can have the place to ourselves as we’ve booked out the whole facilty- including wait for it – accommodation for nearly 140 people. This is great as the majority can all congregate there without having to leave the premises. We have booked out all the rooms- this will be paid from the expense accounts.I will post pictures of the facilities later. You will not be disappointed.

Night Venue:-
This will be held at the same ballroom that Lisa recently –at BCB or the premier hotel in Kluang- Prime City Hotel- Other facilities I checked out did not meet our requirements as we need a facility to hold 300-400 guests and have Audio/visual facilities for VW our MC to facilitate the night proceedings and also the birthday singing etc.
I will also post their brochure soon or you can visit their website by Googling –Prime city./Kluang.

2.Accomodation:-
We have booked out the Oasis on Sat and have made provisions for those coming later and staying for a few more days to stay- the facility are aware. This will cater for nearly 140 people with a mixture of Double rooms/Single rooms and Dormitaries x 2 .I’ve checked it out and they are very clean and comfortable .Some rooms have air con and all have fans- all have toilet and shower facilities which is great. It is spotless. The caretaker assures me that she will spruce it up more before we come!

Some will stay in various relatives houses in Kluang- we have a range here.
We have no doubt many will also squeeze into the relos lodging.Nil problems here.

The rest may choose to stay in a variety of hotels in Kluang. They vary from cheap to Prime City- more upmarkey- again I will attach Prime City and Anika Hotel as an example.
They are ok for many.We have also negotiated from Prime City 30% off the listed rates so a good offer.Got a pool/spa/gym etc and at the same location where we are having the dinner.
A.L states that nearer the time she will go and negotiate for 50% off as for L’s wedding they manage to secure same.
3.Transport:-
We will hire mini buses or private taxis to ferry relos around town.At night we may even hire coaches.
Our own relos cars will also be in service.
The Segamat trip on Sunday will be by coaches. This will be organized by R and all we have to do is to turn up.The day will be taken care off including the makan.

4.Food:-
The important item.
Well no worries-taken care off.
For the day events we will have caterers bringing in various types of food at various time of the day- this will include Chinese/Malay/Indian and Anglo-KFC if needed. All the Malaysian delight will hopefully be sourced closer the time.
We are hoping to get a few stalls set up- like satay , Ramly burger, roti chanai store.More can be arranged later.

Just a footnote- any left over food will not go to waste,we will take it immediately to the Children’s Home immediately so that there are no waste.

Of course we will get the local Kluang favourites too.

For the night event at Prime City in the Matahari Ballroom ,we have mapped out a menu already to suit all including children and will be open for negotiations but it is good.

5.The Big Picture
I’ve approached the local photographic shops in Kluang- they should be able to meet our needs for a very reasonable price and will be booked closer the time. They will be hired for the 2 days and will take pics on the go.They will put it in CD for us- can also be down in time for the night dinner if required. We will also use our own relatives- our hobby photographers.

6.Activities :-
To be organized but we will not be short of helpers-local judging from the response I’m getting .Thank You.
We have so much talents within the family ,I,m sure the we will not be short of entertainment .
We will try and set up wading pools for kids to play and soak: electronic game- Wii ‘s or Playstations and kids activities throughout the day.We will appoint a kids coordinator.
We have DJ’s/singers/music writers/entertainers/comedians in the family that can light up the gathering.Music will be great.Karaoke will be considered naturally.
We have medics/nurses that can take care of the medical emergencies.
Panadols/Aspirins/Decorub/Tiger Balm will be provided if required.
Mosquito repellants will also be available should the mossies wants to join in the fun.
We even have workcover relos that can oversee the occupational health and safety of the proceedings.
We have event organizers/relos capable of handling big crowds and doing the MC work.

7. Equipment:-
We will hire the equipment needed locally- nil problems.Chairs/Tables/entertainment equipment/AV/ tvs etc.

8.Finances:-
The war chest is now standing at nearly $20,000 already.
This is great .
With more benefactors in the coming year we will well and truly exceed expectations.

The account for MOAR has been opened as you are aware and we have
A.L and Papa Cow as joint signatories to manage the account and expenses. They will keep a record of things.
For those who wishes to donate to the fund I have the details:-
Name: TKM and Papa Cow
Bank: OCBC (Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation)
Branch: Kluang
Account Number:- 715-23xxxx-x
Saving Account.

For electronic transfer the swift code is : OCBCMYKL.

Relos wishing to make a donation please notify A.L- her mobile is :-
01x2xx70xx.
This is to ensure she can keep an accurate account.Thanks.

As stated earlier- any surplus funds after all payments for MOAR expenses will be used to set up a charity account- maybe we can start a Wong charity fund.

9. Clan Identification
We will have some form of ID but R came up with a good idea- each clan will have a coloured ribbon of their own.So all the same clan members will have the same coloured ribbon which will hold an ID tag listing their name/generation etc-more details TBA.

So now that we have something concrete ,we will be calling upon the clans to rev up the family and start to make plans. We will be calling on clan members to come up with numbers in the coming months so that the organizers can book the numbers for catering/function as necessary.
Can someone also please make contact with the Hong Kong and China clan to secure their needs to come to MOAR.Accomodation is secured.let us know.

That’s all for now.

Cheers
Unc.James

PS.Will try and post pics of Oasis in Geni.

omg! i cant wait to attend! so much has been done! :D
